Flagstone floor options

Upon the removal of many layers of carpets I've found a flagstone floor in my lounge.

The floor is currently in a bit of a state (very uneaven/chippped etc), and if I'm honest I'm not very keen on the idea of having a flagstone lounge. I don't, however want to destroy them by putting a screed down.

I would like a flat(ish) floor, but as time goes by, I may warm to the idea of flagstones, so don't want to dig them up.

Has anyone been in a similar quandry? The best idea at the moment is a false floor...

My entry for the most blindingly obvious suggestion award is: Can you put rugs down to cover the worst bits?
If it's borderline whether it's a usable floor try living with it for a short while and see what comments you get from friends, you may come to love its wonkiness.
Can you replace the really bad bits with reclaimed flags

Just to add a few comments - I have had a similar dilemma but after thinking it over for about 2 years have gone for the rug option. I can offer the following advice:
- the flagstones keep the room nice and cool in summer, but not so good in winter.
- they can be cleaned, but there are difficulties. I purchased some proprietary cleaning fluid, but then found that it would cost a lot to hire a cleaning/buffing machine.
- removing the flagstones is not a good idea, especially if they are resting on timber joists.
