What are people's preferred methods for this?
Usually I put the boxes over a vertical stud and drill/chisel away enough of it to get the depth I need. That's fine for internal walls where the stud will be a couple of inches deep, but this is going on an external wall and the studs look like they are only about 1" thick. I need about 40mm of depth so I think that's going to eat most of the way through the stud. Its a rubble wall behind so fixing directly onto that probably not particularly easy.
My alternative method is to go alongside a stud and fix through one side of the back box into it but the other end of the box ends up a bit wobbly.
I actually have 3 in a row to do so that might make it worth taking everything off between two studs and fixing a board in place at the right depth to take the boxes. That would also give me a bit more freedom on the box spacing but means more making good.
Any other suggestions?
