I'm sure that you can get a heat detector, to use instead of a smoke detector. The sort of thing that you would have in a garage or kitchen, where smoke is likely, but it detects heat instead.

The insurance work covers a full house rewire, so I'm going to have integrated smoke and heat detectors when that gets underway. Mind you, the fire was on 4th July 2009, so far the contractors have put one piece of steel into the building and that was yesterday!

Yes, the house was relatively clean, but mostly painted white!

When we bought the house, two years ago, it was so dirty that we used 120 litres of white paint, giving all the walls and ceilings two coats of paint! This trapped all the dirt, dust and smell behind the paint.

The people we bought the house from had no concept of cleanliness! Two huge dogs locked up all day and the four young children were like street urchins! I suppose that's why we got such a bargain!

We also thought that we could get away with just cleaning the carpets, but had to renew the whole lot, as they are far dirtier then we had first thought. Some of the carpets were 40 years old.

Don't know how old the carpet was in "next doors" front room but our builders son was born on it 14 years ago when they were renting the house whilst he was doing his barn up. The lad thought it was disgusting when his dad asked if he wanted a bit of it as a memento last year.

Just wondering how long it will be before I stop calling it next door!
