I'm pretty sure it's the William Herschel museum in Bath. I went there about 20 years ago on a school trip and have wanted to revisit it for a long time. Thanks for the reminder

We have put a antique french enamelled stove in ours, haven't got round to having it connected up yet but it looks good. See the link below for similar

Or I have seen them made into great wine storage with a large wine rack or a wine cooler or even a glass fronted beer fridge.....seems to be a bit of a theme going here!

Me too. I'm hoping to take a holiday soon and do lots of day trips - can you recommend some of your favourite kitchens that I could visit?

In Northumberland - although not Geo - Cragside and Wallington, both fascinating. Wallington a lovely example of how a 19th c country house kitchen would have been, and Cragside for the technology.

In Bath though - the other two I mentioned, Sally Lunn's is terrific as is No 1 Royal Crescent.

How do the kitchens in Brodsworth Hall compare?

I've never been - it's actually on the list of places to visit this year - too many to visit and not enough time really - but that too looks very good indeed.

Many houses open to the public have had kitchens restored in recent years - in all honesty I think I'm more interested in how big houses and gardens worked than in the grand owners - I love walled gardens and ice house are a particular passion.

One of my favourite kitchens is however on the way to the loo downstairs in the splendid Watts coffee roasters and shop in Carlisle - amongst shop stock and old equipment for coffee roasting and grinding is a splendid early range and a pantry hidden away. I was allowed a tour last year when I expressed some interest in and knowledge of the history of all this. In fact I suspect the basement is older than the building on top.

Down in the basement, you have to wonder how anyone managed to cook without electric light!
