I've also heard stories about Landcruisers being the vehicles of choice when the going gets seriously tough and reliability is essential. They are also corroborated by a couple of Australian acquaintances who wouldn't risk a Land Rover in the outback. But there's no denying that Land Rover wins the 'iconic' award, which is quite a feat of marketing really and it really does seem to translate into £££s when it comes to residual values.
I had a 1995 Discovery for 10 years and they can now be picked up for around £1500 whereas a Defender of the same age (and with the same respected 300Tdi engine) seems to be around £6000 - so these 'period classics' can be an expensive hobby! One day, maybe.
