I agree. The house will still be there when you get back. Our houses/projects may occupy a lot of our time but it's surely not healthy for them to monopolise it.
Besides, a classic car meeting seems perfectly complementary.

I think you should be really proud of what you've achieved so far and your attitude has been an inspiration to all of us. It's a long process, I find thinking of all the things that we have still to do is overwhelming so it's better to break it down into smaller tasks.
Sometime you need to take a break. A couple of weeks ago we'd both booked a week off work to work on the house. On the Thursday before the week, we thought 'sod it' and on the spur of the moment bought flights to Iceland for a weeks holiday instead. It was great. Working day in, day out will just wear you down - have some breaks and reward yourself for all that you have already achieved. It really is very impressive.

Definitely take a break and go somewhere else. I made some poor decisions when I was running out of money and had been hammering away for too long. A break gives you some perspective on what you've done, what you need to do next and what you've been over complicating.

I have been working on my house for 13 years now - so long in fact that I have been lapped by myself, with parts of the house which I had finished now needing redoing before I have got the place straight for the first time. I often worry if I have done the right thing, hired the right builder, got the right level of quality, that the funds are running out etc. Keep going and you will get there.
Being a self-critical worrier isn't a good recipe for peace of mind but it does spur one on to get things right and to do things better next time. Better to aim high and risk a few misses than always to play safe.

Oh gosh, it's been amazing. My brother has come back, to rebuild the roof on the front extension which I've changed from that nasty porch - I've been helping. He's amazing, so much gets worked out on site as we go. My head is spinning with falls, firrings, upstands, fascias, so much is happening so quickly after months of waiting.

Here's a progress picture. Not sure how much you'll all like it, because the earlier 1940s/1960s extension was out of character with the original house, and what I wanted to do - put a pair of little gables over the front instead of the flat roof - Planning wouldn't let me because it obscured the view of the original house from the street. So I was stuck with the flat roof. So I came up with the idea of the little bonnet on the front, just three rows of tiles and a row of ridges to make it a bit prettier.

(It will all be lime rendered in a pale yellow. The front door is round the side now. You also have to imagine it has windows).
I know the extension is not very traditional, but I'm hoping it will be an improvement on what was there before.
I do have a couple of questions I'd like your opinions on, but I'll start new threads.....

It's cute, and it's not your fault somebody with no imagination stuck the extensions on the front. I'm sure you will make it look much better. Looks like it has a nice aspect at the back onto the church too. Is it diddy inside? I like cosy places.
And how can you say you don't feel like you're making progress - I can't believe how much you have done. Try to enjoy the building works stage - you'll look back on it fondly and miss it when it's gone.

From one extreme to the other. I was waiting for my brother to come back and finish the building works. Well he's back, and it's been intense progress! I've been helping, which has been very useful... On Friday evening he left me a list of useful things I could do if I get a chance over the weekend: put the joist hangers in, strap the wall plates, insert the cavity closers, finish the cavity insulation, insulate the upstand and prime the fascias. It's 11pm on Sunday and I've just finished the list. Pletely zausted.

Thank you so much! It is really the inside and not the outside that is going to give it its Period look.
My brother is hopeful that there is every chance of being watertight before too long! Just need two roofing contractors, one joiner and one lime renderer to play along, me to do my bit, and him to continue to keep away from the farming.
Why oh why though am I doing this during the wettest summer ever known!!
