I just got what I hope is the last firewood bill for 22-23 which takes us to about £1200 for the year. I haven't worked out what the heating share of the Electricity bill may be but I suspect little change out of 2K for both. I thought we were doing well compared to others... that is, until I saw your post.
) No gas supply being very rural so we're on oil, but mainly use our two largeish wood burners to heat the ground floor of the old mill and rarely put the heating on*. Fortunately we have our own wood supply although there have been times when we've run out of chopped, seasoned stuff and resorted to buying it in.
What is the rough total square meterage of floor that is electrically heated? Also, do you know roughly how many hours per day that would have been on for in December?I appreciate there are so many variables to how much electricity a property will use, but our December usage seems extremely high to me. But before I contact our provider I thought I would get a feel for general usage in older properties on here.
According to the meter we used just over 2000kWh of electricity in December, resulting in a bill of just over £700
We have underfloor electric heating which I thought I’d masteredIts set to 17.5 deg in 3 areas and 15.5 deg in the kitchen.
Everything else is pretty standard. I appreciate underfloor heating is expensive to run, it’s been cold and we had our fair share of festive lights, but 2000kWh of usage in a month seems excessive to me.
Gas usage is more than acceptable in the same period.

I had been spending just £600 a couple of years ago. But with the recent hikes, it looks like the annual bill will be pushing £1400. Already cut back on consumption, and am struggling to see where further savings can be made.

Ah yes that’s a nice temperatureEon tried to fit a smart meter unsuccessfully when we first moved in. We have very poor 4G coverage around here and the aerial required to boost the signal was too big for the meter cupboard. Also the gas meter and electric meter are at opposite ends of the cottage and too far apart to communicate with each other apparently. I do read the meter religiously to try and keep updated with the costs.
I‘m currently in Perth (Australia) where it’s a pleasant 32deg so real need for extra heating. 3 weeks away should be saving me some pain from the high costs, but the youngest is house sitting looking after the dog with strict instructions not to adjust anything
But I’ll have a good look at areas and costs as soon as I’m home.

External wall insulation, double glazing, a good 300mm loft insulation, 125mm rigid foam in the flat roof, fussy airtightness, insulated floor slab, Part L doors...
) But the results were conclusive with the average cost dropping to just below £4 a day
Good shout I’d say, £22 a day seems pretty eye-watering!
Smart meters are just an information gathering tool and information is power. Ive heard talk of power rationing in the future but I'm not sure how that works, do these meters have the ability to restrict the amount of power entering a property?
I don't understand...a combi boiler running for 90 minutes uses more electricity than a 1kw heater for 12 hours? But combi boilers hardly use any electricity at all, just the pump and the electronic circuitry....how can it use 12kwh in 90 minutes? Or is your smart meter measuring your gas use too?
