Joce, just had a thought! If you cannot locate sufficient military braiding why not use some good quality black ribbon tied with a bow/ or knot at the top in front of which you hang some black and gold framed miniature silhouettes of the relevant personnel of the time. Strategically placed, half a dozen or so would probably look quite stunning. I suppose you could get braiding from Gieves and Hawkes but it will costa lotta!!

Worth trying Henry Newbery for braiding. We visited their shop in London after recommendations from this forum - they are mainly trade (hence low price, relatively speaking) but are extremely helpful and do sell to the public. The website isnt very useful though- give them a call

How nice that you've got that uniform Joss - and I love the idea of the silhouettes from ribbons. I also need braid for the diagonal joins on the ceiling though, and after reading mardinor's excellent suggestion of Henry Newbery will pop along next week!

I need around 50 metres so yes it is going to be expensive

And you could make it any colour or size (within reason!) that you want.

what a fun thing to make! Thanks for posting the link! I can see that being useful, but as you've imagined less fun to make 50 metres!

Anyway it does need to be flat as it will be glued on the ceiling, as seen here

This one is OK, but I bet it's about £7 a metre, and it isn't military, but it is the right width and colour

It;s easy to find it at 1.5 cm but it needs to be wider than that to conceal the joins. I'll have to go to some specialist shops in London.

If you have a sewing machine that does a zigzag stitch, you could join two together to achieve the desired width.

Methinks we are trying to save Joce a lot of £'s but then she will be very busy creating it all instead!!

It's a good idea Moo! Will use that as a compromise if I either can't find 2 inch gimp or it turns out to be prohibitively expensive. You see it isn't just joins I need to conceal, but also the staples which run down the sides of the boards and are set about 1.5 cm in.
