extractor fan vents under thatch roof

Hi everyone, I want to install an extractor fan in my bathroom and vent it out under the eaves of the thatch. I have discussed this briefly with the conservation officer who said that the vent would need to be as discreet as possible. No big white plastic grill - Don't worry we wouldn't do that!
Can anyone recommend a low profile vent, or has anyone else done this?

You can get rectangular ducting, and there is an adaptor which converts from 4inch round ducting, which the extractor has, to rectangular. The external grilles for the rectangular ducting come in white or brown and could be more discreet than the square ones.

You should keep the ducting path as short as possible and insulate it well so that water doesn't condense in it. There was a bit of discussion on ducting for extractor fans in a recent thread, where is it......ah! Here:

"as discreet as possible" is somewhat vague really. An unhelpful interpretation would be to install anything you like and just say that's the best you could do!

More seriously, I'd expect that much will depend on the nature and colour of the wall it will poke through and that 'discreet' will mainly involve camoflage rather than styling, in which case simply painting the grille to match the wall colour might do the trick. Car spray paints are available in many colours and should work pretty well on a plastic grille.

At the other end of the price spectrum there are 'architectural' grilles available in a variety of designs and metals, including cast iron ones. These might be more 'in keeping' with a period property, though they are not necessarily 'discreet'.

Hi All,
thanks for the feedback and your good humour I will ask my husband to read them at the weekend (works away) and we will consider our options. We are currently applying for planning permission and LBC for our upvc windows to be changed to wood and will include request for the extractor fan on it too . By the way I have seen too many pink cars in Southend, having lived near there myself , often they are decked with a pair of furry dice - nice!!!!

I never quite fathomed out how the steering geometry worked on that. I suspect there was an awful lot of tyre scrub.

Still, I suppose Her Ladyship could afford it.

I can think of lots of things that are more fun to spend money on than tyres. As for whole cars, I confess to having a bit of longing for a matte pink Porsche ( someone parks one in the basement of our building and it is very cute ) or an orange Lamborghini ( any model would "do" ), but both of those are more than a little impractical as I am told they are "drivers cars" and I don't, so the choice won't be down to me. I am worried that we will actually end up with a white van. When I found a garage to buy to go with the house my other half was very pleased to hear that it was large enough to fit a modern transit van, maybe we can compromise and he can have a pink van.
