External paint work

Vicky - I really wouldn't worry about the extra "effort" of linseed oil paints - they're lovely to work with, smell nice, and require much less effort on repainting over the years (or replacing your windows because the plastic paint trapped the water in). Who cares if it's a day or two between coats instead of an hour or two?

Surely your house isn't that finished that you'd be kicking your heels during that time, literally watching your paint dry??!! 8)

It may well be that Vicky's part of Devon has a very low crime rate, but in less salubrious areas the thought of leaving one's doors and windows ajar for days while each coat dries seems to me to be asking for trouble!
(I'm not sure, either, how it would affect one's insurance cover).

Good point Moo. I've been a bit more cautious about leaving things open after my mower was nicked a few years ago. Not that we had it in the house!
You're all starting to convince me to look at the linseed oil paint. I have to get someone to do the upstairs windows and dormers as no one in this house will go up ladder. Will a normal decorator be able to cope with the linseed paint, do you think?

My problem with the linseed oil paint, which I'd love to use, is getting all the layers of modern non-breathing stuff off first. If you use a heat gun it's easy to crack the old glass. If you use chemicals and wire wool it's easy to scratch the old glass. Plus Ian, I'm sure it was Ian, said that putting linseed paint on wood that's been treated with Nitromors doesn't work.
What's the solution, Robin, Biff?

I can't think of any reason why not. But s/he will need instruction - a few coats ofwarmed linseed oil first, then VERY thin coats of the paint building up slowly. If I can master it then anyone can. Just remind him to be careful with the linseed rags afterwards. They can apparently spontaneously combust - sadly I've never had that exciting event happen to me. This may be an appropriate thing to watch whilst waiting for your paint to dry!

Dunno - I've only ever used it on new (old) wood.

Given Nitromors is pretty volatile, I would imagine after a while that it simply evaporates and no longer has any effect on what is put on top? I mean, it can't linger for too log or you'd never be able to repaint anything you'd stripped.

Hmm. I never had a problem putting Dulux primer then FnB on bare, Nitromors 'd pine. But it's modern unbreathing paint innit - and this was inside. I have this memory of a regular here doing all the paint stripping then linseed oil painting in a summer and it not adhering despite the fact he'd washed it well prior to painting. I'll try to find that thread.

Penners, in his great wisdom, suggested using sandpaper to take off most of the modern paint. I started last summer, and found it so so so so laborious, the thought of doing ALL the windows here makes me want to stick my head in the oven.

Vicky - Im guessing you have a lot of modern paint on your windows? In which case I don't see how you can use Holkams without getting rid of it.

Aglaia also have a wonderful range of colours and finishes, sample cards available from Womersleys. I haven't tried their paint, it's very expensive.

Are you sure that was me? It doesn't sound like me. Sanding off all the paint would be extremely hard work - that doesn't sound at all like me. :?

I've used linseed paint over old 'modern' paint. No problem just don't expect some of the unique advantages such as breathability. It'll only stay there so long as the bottom layer stays there.

Which means is actually cheap in the long run. Yes Aglaia are another of the better paint manufactures. That's why Womersley (who is a good bloke) sells it.

i put it in another way, I hate paint and painting.
I will draw the line when some lime wash is involved. I just cover everything in sight to enhance some repairs to an existing structure.

It chips, it stinks , it's poisonous and pollutes everything it touches.

Also, if someone believes that something has to be painted to be beautiful they are wrong, the REAL thing is more beautifull.
This does not mean I do not appreciate the artistic talent of an individual, it's just the stuff they choose to be artistic with.

Just because Michelangelo could paint or sculpt a bit, I still don't like paint. :wink:

For crying out load, they are even trying to get elephants to paint. Has anybody asked the poor animals ?

I have seen the odd girlie who really does suit face paint , as opposed to the real thing underneath.
Although beer goggles can have the same effect.
