Examples of No Skirting Board on 1st Floor

Sry I abandoned this. Been super busy. We’re back at it and we’ve decided to bulk out the low-spots in the wall along the bottom where the skirting board will attach with another coat of insulating plaster and then smooth it into the rest of plaster above. My wife wasn’t keen on the scribed top lid / “boxed in” approach nor the flat “molding” piece approach (as it needs to join to normal skirting board along all the other walls).

I’ll take some pics when we’re done.

Here’s what we ended up with. Pretty happy with this tbh. Finally ready to skim and paint.

Gorgeous fireplace!

It is indeed, sadly will unlikely be used as it’s on the first floor, but never say never… there’s a few houses in the village with very similar style/size, although on the ground floor. Beneath this is a beast…close to 3m wide and 2 high, and the stack is 2m deep and keeps the same footprint all the way to the second floor ridge. Back in the days of 24/7 bonfires it would’ve been quite the heat store… now it’s a very large chunk of space removed from 1st and 2nd floors!

Gorgeous reeded design to the sides on that. I'm guessing the original owner must have had a fair bit more money than average to go to the bother of having such a fine fireplace on the 1st floor. Possibly a parlour for entertaining or a luxurious bedroom detail? Typicaly up in my neck of the woods it would be gentry / wealthy yeoman who had a fireplace such as that on 1st floor.

It’s an oddity this place, originally thrown up as a relatively poorly constructed 3 story wool barn, in the 1400/1500s. However, it was a very early barn conversion, turned into a dwelling around the turn of 1600 or just after, with money as you say. Which is why it’s still here today, as very few other wool barns are still in existence, yet it was the country’s lifeblood for 700 years and ours was in the middle of 3 major national cloth areas.

It then followed the internal evolution of a hall house, so yes the first floor fire was the high end. It’s all stone, with lovely ovolo/ogee mouldings and stops. The downstairs fireplace originally had a stone lintel also, but failed and was replaced with the oversized oak now in place. The left jamb is a replacement top half and we’re yet to determine whether there’s original moulding to the stone as the visible moulding is later stone repair/addition
The tie beams upstairs are all more simply chamfered and stopped, but in the hall the summer beam is moulded as is the bearer for the floor joists at the high end.

Reverse engineering the floor structures into the existing barn was not an easy feat, and has resulted in some experimental carpentry joints and methods. It’s likely it was converted to a dwelling by a yeoman around 1600, almost certainly connected to the cloth trade

however the question we’re still looking to answer is why convert an average construction barn into a house in the 1600s, when land and oak were plentiful, so why not just build new compared to the challenges of converting. Equally, no effort was made as an external show of wealth to match the internal features and details.

If we ever finish restoring her and move back in, one day I have a few days to spend at the records office in Gloucester as a wealthy family there married into the manor here not long after the conversion and there means is labelled in the old seat map we have , with this plot being one of a few never being part of the manorial estate.

Every turn throws up more questions!

You are taking my kind of language! How fantastic, love that stuff. Very mysterious converting a barn to a dwelling, especially by a relatively wealthy person. All part of the fun trying to piece it all together! I'm restoring a Yeoman clothiers house up in Yorkshire, some nice chamfered features and stops to beams , like yours a huge inglenook with early bressumer still in situ. It was a timber frame house encased in stone in circa 1600. We have had some nice finds amidst all the frustrations of concrete and cement removal!
