I would love some pigs - but the problem is - who looks after them if you go away for a few days? We have trouble getting somebody to collect the eggs - but at least the bees take care of themselves!

Hello Coz! Welcome to the forum - I'm in Harrowby Without.

This is the great problem with animals. Sometimes kind folk ( Gareth Hughes!! Xx) can be bribed to have a "holiday", sometimes you can persuade your Mum and Dad, or rope the gardener in, or a kind neighbour, but more often than not lots of animals mean fewer weekend breaks and no long holidays abroad. I'm pretty happy with that as I've travelled to just about every continent and seen as much as I need to - paradise is right here with my animals.

Wiggs Pigs! I'm drinking to celebrate! Very jealous too - you beat me!

Thanks for the advice about catering Mr P, it sounds complicated - something to ponder about I think.

I'd like bees too but what about the stings? It's bad enough managing the cockerels, not sure I can take more aggression from pets.

Graham, you ought not to ask Jo to do the chickens. Bad husband, you should be running a bath for her and heating up Abi's lovely food for when she gets in.

Hi Joce - can't say I have heard of your village - whereabouts in Lincolnshire is it near? Re: The bee stings. We actually moved our bees across from Wakefield in West Yorkshire last week. My hubby got stung twice even though he was wearing all the gear. We are not fortunate enough to have any relatives here to help with the chickens and although we have been here a year only know a couple of the neighbours neither of whom would help. Despite our best efforts to make friends none of them seem to be interested and go out of their way to avoid us. We shall keep working at it. We are in the process of going through the motions of planning etc - and are now just waiting for building reg approval. Then we have the job of getting all the samples approved by the conservation officer and hopefully can get started. We have lots of work to do in the garden and are slowing starting to see things happen and we love living here.

Ah that's the beauty of Wiggs Piggs - it's a cartel of 10 other people (workmates) and me - we've got 7 pigs, they all have boght half a pig each, and in return for me providing land/labour they do the chores when I'm away.

We finish up with a big butchery party in the autumn!

Poor Coz, it does get easier with getting to know people, but it does take ages too. I know your area, beautiful and wild is how I think of it, with tons of animals.

Hi Joce thanks for your kind messages and offer. I think we have found a solution for the hens when we go away. The kennels where our Border terrier is booked into is literally round the corner. When I mentioned about the chickens to the lady there she offered to come round and collect the eggs and top up their supplies if necessary. Also I have invested in two Chickboxes which have a rollaway egg collection box so i am trying to train them to lay in there in time for when we go away. We will have to have a ride across to you sometime and take you up on your offer of a cuppa. You are welcome to come across to see us anytime.
