back to nem's point; even in paper bags, hydrate is fine. even when wet it is only the outer contents that goes cakey........ i think that was all part and parcel of a previousl misinformation regarding the urban myth of non-hydraulic hydrate being 'carp'

the only difference between putty and hydrate (aside from cost) is the amount of water added to the quicklime during the production process.

To make putty you simply need an excess of water, so dump the bag of lime into the 25gallon bin and then fill it with water. Since you already have the tubs, after a couple of weeks you could dig out spadefuls of putty and refill the tubs, leaving the bin free for the next batch. Cover the putty in the tubs with the excess water from the bin before you close the lids.

Wish I had access to empty tubs!

NT, rather than throwing it away what use would I make of it in the garden? embedding stones in a path etc.

Reacted lime is simply chalk, so can be broken and put in the garden to either dispose of it, or use as a white mulch, raise the pH, or whatever else chalk is used for in gardens. Maybe a gardener with greater knowledge will know more about chalk's uses.

I managed to get the mortar back to life by using my drill and paddle mixer plus water. I tried some on a bit of pointing I'm doing and though it set it seems be lacking a bit of lime and I was able to rub it off although it did seem to harden. I'm going to add some of the lime putty I mixed up last week and see if I can improve the set. It's as though the mortar is a 6:1 mix the moment so I'm going to add another some more putty at about 6:1 and see if it works.

The blue circle bagged hydated lime has produced a really nice putty and for the record
I started with about 2 lites of water and gadually added the lime whilst stirring with a stick.
After a days slaking I had a thick putty which I'm pleased with. I can't see any plastic in the bag but there are perforated holes on the outside so it could be a layer of plastic sandwiched
between the paper. I'll rip it up when the powder has gone. No evidence of any carboation
just dry powder.

lime is especially good for brassicas (cabbages etc) and for neutralising acid soil. DO NOT USE IT on azaleas, rhododendrons camelias etc EVER!!!!!
spread it around anything that says "grows well on chalk"
I wouldnt be too liberal with it, but to dispose of it you could easily strew it around the garden and lawn. wont do too much harm if you spread it finely and water it in.
as long as you avoid any acid loving plants.
