Lou, I found this picture of the interior of Pendean Farmhouse on the website of the Weald and Downland museum. The layout seems to be remarkably similar to yours, although Pendean is C17th, and therefore not as old. You can see their door in the same position.

Thanks, - how interesting! I have a book from the Welsh Royal Commission about houses in Wales and the Welsh Marches from 1400 onwards, and had a visit from the author Richard Suggate, that confirms the layout of our house to be almost identical to that of all Welsh and Welsh Marches houses of the time - with the dais partition and canopy still very much intact - but it's fascinating to see that this weald house - so far away - also looks similar.
