I would want a bakelite-headed screw to fix bakelite switches. Avoiding serried ranks of shiny metal dots twinkling from the finger plates.

Surely, Zebra, the opposite of "thick but tough" would be "thin but squidgy", wouldn't it?

Technically/linguistically correct, but for a door spindle it's shim metal that sounds like the answer.

In my yoof when mending or building stuff, I used to cut up Oxo tins for such purposes. A couple of slivers of Oxo tin would solve the spindle problem "at a stroke".

I've used strips of cans for shims before now, but that wouldn't solve my particular problem because the small spindle that fits the handles is too short for the door thickness and the standard spindle that is the correct length is too large for the handles - and I've never heard of a 'negative shim' before, but it would be a very useful trick! :wink:

My bench grinder solved the problem and I now have an 8mm spindle with 7.4mm (-ish) ends

Yes, but I was referring to the other phrase in Keith's first post - "I have a sheet of very thin but stiff metal"..... OK, a bit tenuous as a joke, but it's quiet round here...
