I doubt he'd be able to read it - what he's posted here is barely literate ("single-pained windows" for heaven's sake), in addition to being a pack of lies.

Whilst I certainly wouldn't want double glazing in my property, I am surprised that given some recent threads, our resident eco-lobby hasn't been questioning why you don't want secondary glazing. Let's not forget that this is being driven by CO2/energy consumption reduction targets. This is one of my issues, the eco lobby is so evangelical that heritage and historically important buildings are of little concern. How long before secondary glazing becomes standard and Building Regs begin to insist on double glazing (even in listed buildings)...don't say it will never happen.....because some people would do it tomorrow if they could.

Back to the OP, if you end up having to fit secondary glazing, don't forget that this could be designed as easily removable panels...which could be in situ for the inspection and then removed afterwards.

Don't know who you have in mind, Peter, as most round here are pretty keen on retaining historic fabric. I, for one, woould never recommend the removal of historic single glazing. With new build and replacement of 1970s rubbish I have often argued that it is better to have well designed double glazing than a pastiche of repro inauthenticity but I'm rather passionate about the conservation of historic material.

It's not easy making secondary glazing that looks good. I've done a few but it's hard to be really pleased with the result.

But the issue in this case is not the conservation of original windows (since these have already been replaced)...it's whether installing secondary glazing is a desirable thing. I happen to agree completely with you Biff....but if we can flex the need for insultation on the basis of period property aesthetics, can you see how some people are similarly resistant to making other changes in their lifestyle? eg. I happen to think that the Prius is a truly ugly car....whereas the Ferrari 550 is a work of art and a design classic. Does this justify me in opting for the Ferrari? It's all aesthetics at the end of the day....just one is a topic about which you are personally passionate.

Umm.. just going back to inamuddle's original post - secondary glazing on escape windows? i.e. windows you need to open pdq to get out of the building in event of fire? We've made secondary glazing for our draughty north-facing leaky windows and it would take a fair bit of smashing to get out in a hurry if they were our primary escape option. (Admittedly they're toughened glass.)
