I do ask myself if we are really making any progress with this room. It looked a lot better a year ago.

I entirely sympathise. I spend hours contemplating how little I seem to have achieved since I have been off work....

You probably don't need more ideas here, but in my recent trip to the Tyrol I was impressed that the tradition of architectural trompe l'oeil as applied to exteriors of building seemed alive and well:

Some trompe l'oeil above or around the cupboard could look good:

It's always difficult to solve an aesthetic problem like this one, Joce, when the object in question is surrounded by such a contrasting colour.
I've had a clumsy 'go' at colouring in the wall with something much darker, and will e-mail it to you, but I think we should ask a Photoshop expert like Penners (who will have plenty of time now that I've solved his dishwasher problem for him) to do it properly and post it here for the benefit of us all.

The cupboard looked a little better last night after sellotaping the lights in a different spot, it glowed mysteriously - because of the layout of the house you see it pretty much as soon as you come in the front door so it's going to be a pretty dominant feature.

And the trompe l'oeil's - I love them - I wonder what could be achieved with stencil? Alas, my painting skills are not up to some of the effects pictured above.

I just wish Chris and I could agree about colour, and wallpaper. I've had to rethink my earlier scheme of dark maroony walls and dark brown woodwork as it's just depressing.

I've found that any lamps that take normal or halogen bulbs tend to be rather fragile. I got myself one of these in the end:-

It stays quite cool, unlike the halogen ones, and gives a nice even light to work to. Mine has endured being dropped on several occasions and is still functioning.

As I said above, the interior lighting is only an improvement if you can see its effect, but can't see it! Otherwise it's just an uncomfortable glare.

Moo pays me undeserved compliments about my Photoshop abilities, but if you wish I will happily play with an alternative colour, if you post a swatch of it here. I'd use the photo of the room with Chris in it, unless you want to post another.

Many many virtual Kitkats to Mr P, but I won't trouble him on his Photoshop abilities just now as we need to narrow down the choices of wallpaper a bit first. Having rejected the very dark maroon, I've now sent off for around 20 samples of other reds. :roll:
In the past it's been possible for Chris to lift the image of the wallpaper from the manufacturer's website, and apply it to a mock up room - a useful device.

Phew! That means I can preserve the untested myth about my Photoshop abilities for a little longer.

By the way, I regard virtual KitKats as virtually useless, so don't imagine you can get away with that trick!
