It obviously does penetrate the holes to some extent, and the beetles have to crawl past on their way in or out.
Or you can use one of those little squeezy bottles with a rubber bit on the end with a tiny projecting steel tube. It's tedious injecting every hole, but it penetrates well and hardly smells in the room

Well, we’ll leave it a difference of opinion. Nobody who works in restoring timber would ever consider using it.

If theres beetle, then the timber is too damp. That’s what needs solving, the cause, not the symptoms.

Hi folks,after reading what you’ve all written I’m just jumping on for some advice after reading that you say earthborn clay paint is NOT breathable enough for lime plaster!

Weve jsut had our whole house plastered, secil eco cork on stones then a skim over the top, and wood wool board then a skim on internal walls,…

We’ve just finished first coat upstairs with watered down clay paint from earthborn… I thought it was a perfect option for lime being clay

Please tell
Me I haven’t ruined my plaster!!

I personally wouldn't worry about the small difference in vapour permeability between limewash and claypaint.

The SD value of a single coat of limewash is under 0.01, but after the 4 or 5 coats you need, it's probably 0.01 or slightly over. The SD of a single coat of claypaint is 0.03, two coats will be a bit more (but not necessarily double). Anyway, the SD value gives the equivalent thickness (in metres) of a layer of still air at standard sea-level pressure that would have the same permeability as the paint layer. So 0.01 means the paint has the same vapour permeability as a 1 cm thick layer of air, 0.03 means a 3 cm thick layer of air. I don't really think that you need worry about an increase in vapour resistance equivalent to a couple of centimetres of air as a problem with any significance whatsoever.

It'll be fine, clay paint is something like 0.02 in comparison to 0.01 for Lime wash. Most people choose clay paint or even a modified lime wash for interior walls due to the practicality and hardiness. Pure lime wash can be tricky to apply and often easily rubs off on contact, especially if the wall wasn't watered enough before application. And upstairs is even less of a problem, save the really breathable stuff for downstairs where it actually matters! There are other paints to consider like silicate or distemper (another modified version of lime wash).

Thanks guys! That’s good to know… yes I was thinking all night that perhaps downstairs where the walls are still really damp patches drying out, perhaps for the next year or so, when I eventually paint I should perhaps consider a lime wash even for a few years so it can really keep drying
(the limes been on about 2 months now but still v damp on one wall)

Distemper - an option I’ve read about, any experience over line wash?
