Damask wallpaper I don't need a second mortgage for!

Surely Thomas The Tank Engine wallpaper spans two centuries now so perhaps it could also be considered to have a timeless appeal. :wink:

I recall enjoying the books as a youngster, though it all went downhill in the video age when Ringo became involved.

Have you seen the "new" Mr Men??? Gone are the gentle 1970's cartoons narrated by Arthur Lowe, aka Captain Mainwaring. Instead in their place is a brash horrible computer generated cartoon, with loud obnoxious versions of the original characters, and all the accents are American. :evil: (apart from Mr Rude, who is French! :lol: ) Is nothing sacred? Roger Hargreaves must be spinning at about 2000 rpm I reckon.

Staircases and hallways get lots of wear and tear, especially with young kids around. I have decided to paint mine rather than wallpaper.

Fair point about Ringo; yes, it could have been so much worse. Still, that was not an issue during my childhood as Thomas was only available in book-form and was essential bedtime reading. Television-wise, my favourite was Ivor The Engine. Indeed, FF junior was the perfect excuse to buy the video tapes and I had many happy hours re-watching all those gentle stories.

It's been bugging me what that damask paper reminds me of... and suddenly it came to me.

It's the flock wallpaper from the curry house I used to go to as a student.

Surely that won't need a second mortgage?

I was thinking more along the lines of dragging and flogging and then giving them a good dose of distemper.

Television-wise, my favourite was Ivor The Engine. Indeed, FF junior was the perfect excuse to buy the video tapes and I had many happy hours re-watching all those gentle stories.

I rushed out to get the DVD as soon as my eldest was old enough to appreciate Ivor. My favourite programme as a child, and I found that they had aged surprisingly well - the only dated point that stood out was the very Peter Sellers style dodgy accent for the Indian elephant keeper, that certainly wouldn't happen now. Small Films made some fantastic children's programmes - Ivor the Engine, The Clangers, Noggin the Nog, Bagpuss to name but a few - and I was very sad to hear of the death of Oliver Postgate, who was something of a hero of mine.

They still show Ivor on S4C I believe - perhaps Robin can verify - and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog has a fantastic selection of Ivor merchandise!

Sorry FW, my Welsh doesn't stretch as far as S4C - even for childrens programmes. I can just about sing "Mae hen wlad fy nhadau" for international matches.

Also never been on the Porthmadog railway - but it looks good.

Beware that the silvergate papers have a very large pattern repeat length of 1.3 meters compared with the usual of around 0.5 to 0.6m so are probably more suited to a very high room.
(Zoffany's Temple Newsom/Long room/princes room replica also has a huge repeat length - pity thay don't do the original colorway which was a gold on a blue background)

I'm finding all the gold/Yellows have a background too similar to the pattern and the golds themselves once you get a sample are often too brown: so the effect from a distance is a murky brownishyellow mess: which actually was the problem with the very old previous wallpaper and made a decent 5m*5m room too dingy.
The F&B are indeed flat matt and as an example Zoffany's are more silky/sheen.

Ah, thanks for the warning re Silvergate - I hadn't noticed that bit of the small print. Which means it is definitely out for below the dado, because you wouldn't get even one repeat, and definitely out for above, as the walls are SOOOOO huge... Maybe we will end up with DH's suggestion from last night, of stripes

I think it looks better to paper up to the dado, and paint above in a colour you like that's in the paper. That may just be personal preference though, not sure there's any kind of hard and fast rule about that these days.

I used "Print Room Yellow" and the matching yellow Plain Stripe 1141 for my Print Room - I think the murky, mustardy yellow gets lifted by white mouldings, sharp black and white prints and gilt here and there. A bold look, I know, not for everyone.
