I can't see repair mortar giving an acceptable finish. I think it would come out looking a very flat colour. It would be a bit like painting them again. One of the nice things about brick, even nice quality facing brick is the slight variation that the natural clay and slight differences in firing gives leading to the attractive texture and colour of brick. If you look at a wall built of modern red engineering bricks that are all exactly the same colour and with a slightly shiny finish, it never looks so nice as it is such a flat colour.
