"Curtains"

Not seen these before, but they appear to provide more thermal efficiency than normal curtains. An important issue when we have single glazing:

- They're window quilts if you can't be bothered to click on the link.

Does anyone have experience of such things? Good idea? Do they last if made properly? Suitable for most period properties?

Seems Canadians have been using them for years.

I do remember one rather desperate winter here and fastening a thick quilt to a the downstairs window, yes. It did make a tremendous difference.

Nice idea, but they do look a bit, well, quilty. I've made some very thick interlined curtains which effectively have blankets hand-stitched between the outer and the lining, they're tremendously heavy and warm, I don't suppose there's much difference between them and quilts to be honest.

This is the interlining (the one at the top, 410g) -combine that with a heavy chenille, wool or velvet and thick cotton lining and you get a real draught excluder. I'll be going on their Roman blind course in Feb if anyone would like to join me? The very warmest combination is Roman blinds and curtains, which you see in many country houses.

I agree with Joce, heavy bump lining should have pretty much the same effect! Also agree with Penners, 'tis a lot of work and very heavy to shift the curtains about as they are being sewn together!. Cling film might be just as effective

Isn't the easiest way to insulate yourself rather than the house? A couple of layers of high performance thermal undies, fleecy onesie, lovely sweater and slippers, all problems solved :lol:

:lol: no, but I apply the same idea, I uninsulate myself and turn off the aircon.

Joce, I notice you have a radiator under the window. Do you plan to place a roman blind at that window so you can leave the curtais open? I presume you suffer from heat loss in the room if you shut the curtains?

Luckily? for you the nice people at Samsung had equipped the device with means for it to talk to my laptop, so I could re-size them, my file was much smaller afterwards......

That's really a very good idea Sonya, thanks! To be honest our heating is only on 2, maybe 3, hours a day usually, that alone costs 2k and we think that's enough to spend on oil, not to mention the extra 1k on electric heat! :x We tend to huddle round a fire, and all the shutters and curtains get closed around 3pm. The heat loss of the rads behind curtains is a small problem compared to 14 very rattly windows, 5 open fireplaces and bare floorboards suspended over earth! But we're working on things.

The Roman blinds I've in mind are for this room where the shutters pull across in such a way (without rebates) that curtains are an impossibility. There've never been curtains or blinds here and I just think it would warm and soften the appearance of the windows. I've a tiny piece of moulding at the top between the pane and the shutter where I can site a baton to suspend the blind, just around 1.5 inch so they're going to be sheer blinds in a light ivory silk with green trim.

I only asked as we have 57 radiators under window positions! I don't want to shut the heat away behind the curtain so I'm thinking a nice blind would be functional and decorative coupled with curtains that are just decorative.
