do gorgeous poles, finials and rings, very generously proportioned. They're pine with no MDF etc. Their "walnut" finish goes perfectly with old antique oak furniture.

In the end I went for the Edward Harpley finials in oak, which have just arrived. They are beautifully turned and finished. A little darker perhaps than my poles, but then to have coordinated the colouring I guess I should have ordered everything together. Will post pics when installed.

Irritatingly the finials dont quite fit as they interfere with the large brass discs on the screws which hold the poles to the brackets. All can be adjusted of course, but it means taking everything down, plugging holes, redrilling etc so that the brackets are slightly further in (a quarter inch is all that is needed).
Also the colour of the finials is just different enough from that of the poles to be irritating. I could tint the poles a bit with a glaze and revarnish but that means unsticking all the selfadhesive velcro which holds up the swags.
If I was going to do this for a living I could chalk it up to experience and avoid it next time, but I dont see myself doing another set of curtains like this in a hurry.

That is so unbelievably vexatious. If you could live with it, you could alter the pole's colour when you feel the swags need to go off for a dry-clean.
It's best if such things can be ordered all at once, but it doesn't always work out like that- we bought curtains for the hall to protect against the onslaught of winter, now I'm decorating they've come down (I'll probably Ebay them) and the pole will have to as well- I do sympathise with all the mucking about curtain hanging entails.
And I bet you do make more curtains one day, you're too good not to!

First finial finally in place:
I had to darken the pole to match. It had been varnished, so I applied a water-based glaze over the varnish consisting mainly of van dyke brown dissolved in malt vinegar and a smidgen of washing up liquid to act as a wetting agent. I kept moving the glaze around to keep it even while drying it with a hot air gun. I then varnished over the glaze.
The oak pole, which is fitted above and further from the wall than the brass rod on which the curtains hang, is solely for holding up the swags and tails.

I love the combination of all the rich colours and textures, and oh, your cornice. The pleats are so sharply done it's a pity to cover them up! Where did you get the brass pole, and more importantly, where did you get the brass brackets?
