Since you ask, yes! (Or at least, yes they did while I was in the RAF).

However, I always thought that there was an element for Council Tax in the married quarter rent, but I might be mistaken as things have changed so much in the intervening years.

That still doesnt make the system a fair system.
I also dont believe we live in a true democracy, in fact I believe it is anything but.
Did we get a chance to vote wether or not we should invade middle eastern countries for instance? Although we are all paying for it.

Well, we did, sort of. Our parliamentary democracy enables us to vote for our representative in parliament (MP). We then delegate him/her to act on our behalf. This is mainly a pragmatic solution because it wouldn't be practically possible for us to vote on every decision made by government and no parliamentary business would ever get done.

Of course, whether or not that would make things better or worse is a whole different matter. :wink:

That might have been true in the past, but in these "American Idol" "BGT" etc days I think we could easily all log in on a Sunday morning and approve ( or not ) the previous weeks business. Of course it would mean having Simon Cowell as PM.

I understand Rob's feeling of discontent of paying out only to see the system abused, and not to feel like you particularly use the services you're obligated to support, but FW is right. You never know when you will use those services, and you also never know, when you use a building, a road, an open space, someone's services, whether that thing or someone would even be there if it weren't for tax.

Chris and I have been discussing our next travel adventure - but I think I'm now too boringly middle aged to really want to holiday in Kenya, China, or South America - as we had always longed to do. At least we do get to live in a safe country here in the UK, where you're highly unlikely to be kidnapped, or caught in the cross fire over an argument about cattle!
