Last century, when I were a young man a-courtin', we used to go to Woodbridge cinema, near Ipswich. It had a corrugated iron roof and stood right beside the railway line.

When it rained hard you couldn't hear the sound-track of the film, and when a train went past the building the projector used to wobble so much you couldn't see the picture.

Once upon a time I lived in Queensland, Australia where the traditional type of house is basically a glorified shed with a tin roof and no insulation whatsoever (mind you it never goes below about 5 degrees C) - there's a good Wiki article about this style of house http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queenslander_(architecture)

When it rains in coastal Queensland, it really does rain - topical downpours basically - and while the drumming on the ol' tin roof can be a bit noisy, you get used to it . . . . indeed, you grow to love it. Tin roofs are gloriously cheap, easy to repair - marvellous. I'd have one here at the drop of a hat if I could.

Well, get the foil faced Kingspan and it's nice and shiny and silver. You could go for a 70's disco style, get a glitter ball in, a few lights.....

But no, it needs to be pretty and cottagey. It's a place I spend a lot of time. The view across the valley is lovely, through one of the original Georgian windows. Last year I stapled green polka dot oilcloth against the boards ( the building is constructed of old floorboards). It was a complete waste of time and money - not because of the mess of the birds - who sleep in a huddle on newspaper, which gets changed every day, but because the Creosote from the wood soaked into the oilcloth and sent it streaky.

Maybe I could line the building with the kingspan, then wooden boards on top? Then paint.

You could cover it with almost anything really - timber is fine but expensive, ply or sterling board (OSB - Orientated Strand Board - looks like a board made out of lumps of timber glued and and squashed together, which is exactly what it is) would be fine as well and cheaper (should that be cheeper? :roll: ).

Lining the inside with Kingspan will be very quick and easy - it's light and easy to cut, just screw it in place. Covering it with timber will take more time. Thinking of the "getting around to it" factor, why not get it lined quickly now with Kingspan before it gets too cold and then sort out the timber / ply / OSB lining & decoration come spring?

That's a really fab idea. I think, from what you've said, I could do the Kingspan myself. But I can't use a saw - or rather, when I have used a saw on tough wood it's been very hard for me to get it neat and straight. The lining in wood, or fake wood, is going to have to be done by my dad, or, more realistically as dad is busy, by a tradesman. Perhaps another option would be to measure very specifically and get the pieces cut to size. It'll have to wait as you say. It'll be interesting to see the birds' reaction to a whole wall of foil, as even a tiny bit of foil, or a shiny brooch, makes them crazy with excitement. Perhaps try to get the plain stuff!

Apologies to Downshifter, please just take the thread back when you need to, we tend to veer wildly off, but that doesn't mean we aren't very interested in your project.

Yes, you could do the Kingspan yourself - it's very very easy to cut with a hand saw. Your biggest problem will be that you'll find the boards unwieldy to handle on your own if you get 8' x 4' - and they will snap easily if the wind catches them. Maybe you'd be better getting one of the smaller sizes, though of course that means more joints. You can get non-foil boards if you think that the sight of distorted reflections would drive the birds insane!

Useful, but it's going to have to be lots of little bits because of the construction of the shed, which has the outer skin of floorboards nailed to a framework of joists. ( not sure if joists is the right word, but I thought I'd give it an airing!) will try to find pic so you see what I mean.

You can cut it to fit between the studs (they might once have been joists!) or just cover over the top. You'll lose a bit of space but get better insulation, and it'll be quicker to do. More prone to damage if you knock it though, as you've got a gap behind to push it into.

I see what you're saying about just nailing it over the top. That sounds sensible - space isn't an issue, this home is too big for them anyway. Certainly it would save time and effort , it took me about a week to cut all those little bits of oilcloth.
