Cornicing, coving restoration

Regarding the falling away of plaster cornice....I did have such incidents due to my cornicing being cracked in places and water/steam getting in behind it and making it unstable. I always knew when this was going to happen because when I taped the cornice with my wooden tool thingy, it had a hollow sound. I managed to save the bits that came away and refixed them. The cracks in the cornice followed cracks running across the ceiling so I also had a good idea as to when this was going to occur....if you follow my drift.

Gosh - what a stunning difference! Is the original colour a nice duck egg blue?

yes, it looks like a kind of duck egg blue, I have not been able to get a section where I can see the color properly as it is covered in around 2ml of gloss and emulsion paint .... I have so much to go that I might get one in the future

What an interesting cornice - very mid 19th Century and well worth restoring to its former glory. What is the dark colour in the hollow bit? Is it accumulated grime or part of the original decorative scheme I wonder? Either way it looks effective.

I think myself incredibly lucky that I don't have cornicing that is so incredibly gunged up! Imagine just painting that fabulous cornice over and over until it was virtually unrecognisable! What a great job you are doing. That is definitely something you will be proud of when it is finished.
