Here are some of my cornices:
My drawing room, where I wanted the cornice to match the fake oak colour of the woodwork:
My wife's bathroom - a modern (1960s?) cove which I painted and stencilled to match the wallpaper:
My hall, where I attempted a polychromatic scheme:
And finally this is the cornice in the main bedroom after cleaning showing what might originally have been a two coloured scheme. I later distempered it in white, but am thinking of using two colours when I next redecorate:

Great job Nigel,I have no imagination and end up doing everything magnolia! I must try harder.
Yesterday evening we went to a delightful chamber concert at Goldsmiths Hall. The music was excellent, but for me the hall itself was the star of the show.

Gosh! It seems that simply typing the address creates a link all by itself!
Although it says it can't find the virtual tour, there's a link to the Hall that will take you there.
BTW, when you open the virtual tour the picture is blurred, but will gradually come into focus and then you'll see little arrows on the carpet that will take you upstairs and into the Hall. When you get there you must examine the ceiling!

Mmm, stunning. Chris has talked about this place,he often nips out at lunch to look at interesting buildings.The opulence of all that marble work! Reminiscent of the magnificent entrance of the Norwich Union building, I think.

Nigel and Joce and Chris, I am envious of your beautiful interiors and I always love seeing your photo's. Its not just because I am sat here with my half plastered walls, cement covered flagstones and loft insulation stuffed down the sides of the windows to keep the drafts out.

Aww, so nice of angrybird and Alex to post that. Your houses will be beautiful, and all done out, of course they will.
Many ( most?) would say I'm crazy as I've prioritised interiors before anything else. OK, we did remedy the damp by removing sections of failed cement render, and have roofed the lean-to and seen to gutters and installed new drains - but not so much building work compared to others on here. Where others would have bought a bathroom, I bought antiques. Where others might have splashed out the 15 k for a reliable water supply, we bought a field to safeguard our view. My parents and in laws are horrified by many aspects of the house - it is all a question of priorities and what you can live with!
I have huge, ambitious ideas for the property and I'll never finish what I've started, but it's fun nonetheless.

What should I google in order to find a relatively local stockist of the stuff (pigment?) you used to colour your home-made distemper?

Joce, I have a friend who lives on a new estate in one of those little boxes, she is so house proud that it makes you feel uncomfortable sometimes. I secretly enjoy watching the look of horror on her face when she comes to visit me.

Here is a book from the period by Christopher Dresser that can be downloaded. Page 93 has some very simple guidelines for colouring a cornice. A reprint is available I think called the "principles of Victorian decorative design"

the same site also has the "grammar of ornament" by Owen Jones which is a beautiful study of ornament but less practical.

What wonderful links, Nigel and PP! Thanks to you I think I'm going to be able to do justice to the cornice and ceiling rose.
After, that is, I've discovered the difference between F&B's Casein and Soft distempers; they recommend the Soft one for "fine plasterwork to enhance detailing". They only offer 54 colours, as opposed to 132 in the Casein variety, although I suppose I could just get a 5 litre tin of it in white and then go on pilgrimage to Fitzpatricks.
At the moment I'm playing around with tester pots of: India Yellow, Hague Blue, Terre D'Egypt, and Orangery (though I suspect that the latter will be too strident).

Nice colours, love Terre d'Egypte. Casein is for high wear areas - I've used it in the little bathroom here. It doesn't brush off and the look is more towards estate emulsion - there's less variation in pigment, so a more overall uniformity, Soft is very thin, very chalky, very good for delicate detail - I'd go for soft on cornices and ceilings and above picture rails.
Not sure how stirring in a lump of pigment into FnB's white would work out, I think it's a bit on the brave side.
