conservation area- colour of front door

If I see two or more houses with identical coloured doors or paintwork, some teeny part of me thinks they must be rented and the landlord painted the lot at once.

This is despite me yearning for the other half of our last semi to paint the front of his house to match mine.

well , sometimes , just sometimes i tend to put , well , commas i guess , usually ten to a sentence, just like this , as if i am talking , just like , ,

schoolmarm if they were rented then the doors would be magnolia , as would the walls , ceilings , skirting boards , window frames , kitchen units and anything else that needs a neutral 'touch up'.
when i stated to my land lord that i wanted to paint this cottage white instead of magnolia there was a short air of silence followed by a baffled look, however when i followed with ''it will make the place look much much bigger inside'' they couldn't agree more, they even painted the internals of next door white.

-ize is surely far too American for PPUK, assuming it's a legitimate word at all.

However, according to a web monitoring company in our former colony, there are now one million English words so who really knows if such derivations are valid or not, especially when they claim the one millionth word is "web 2.0". Only in America. :roll:

I've just signed up to a Facebook group whose stated aim is to repeal the American Declaration of Independence - largely on the premise that they are not doing a great job governing themselves. Their b@stardisation (or more probably, b@stardization) of the mother tongue is a further reason.

St Benet's Abbey was a Benedictine monastry founded in 1020. It stands beside the River Bure near Ludham in what is now the Norfolk Broads National Park. The monastry was vastly powerful in its day, and it is suggested that the huge consumption of peat to run the kitchens, bakery etc. created the extensive shallow diggings which were later inundated forming (at least some of) the Broads themselves. The mill (from hazy memory) was added to the ruined gateway in the 18th century - I supoose they reckoned to make good use of an existing structure. The mill tower and gateway still stand today, and are well worth a visit. I sailed past it a couple of weeks ago, but the wind was too good to waste so we didn't stop. A Norfolk historian will be along shortly to add corrections and details.

The site is apostrophised as "St Benet's Abbey" on the OS map, and thats' good enough for me.

But it's a contraction of St Benedict's Abbey, and I've seen it apostrophised as "St Bene't's" (hence my question)

FamilyWiggs: honestly, that misplacement of the apostrophe in "that's" was a genuine typo rather than grammatical ignorance. But the irony of it..... I'll get my coat.

The use of the grocers' apostrophe can be quite charming. Last Christmas a stall in Chapel Market in Islington selling those circular arrangements of foliage to hang on one's front door had a large handwritten sign proclaiming "Reef's".

On the subject of colour, conservation area guidelines can be far too prissy and even inauthentic. In my part of Islington, dominated by late Georgian and early Victorian townhouses we are urged to paint external windows white. This is not at all how they would originally have been so I ignored it. Noone has yet objected. When I applied to reinstate my front railings my suggestion of pale green in imitation of weathered bronze was rejected and I was told to use black, yet there is ample evidence that bronze green is an authentic colour. Next time I paint them I will try the green and see if any action is taken.

My advice is to push the boundaries and try it on, especially if its cheap and easy to change if the Council seriously objects.

Good idea, paint it how you want.

A local councillor near us got on his high horse about the colour that an Indian restaurant had been painted and said that all the buildings would look better in white!! It was pointed out that the Brown and yellow colour scheme was much more authentic as a 1600s than white. I think a good quality job using traditional paint is more important than what ever fashions are around this week.
