Thats another story. The electricity meter which we knew we would be getting rid of had to be replaced at the suppliers insistance about two months before we had it taken out. We told the guy who came to do it not to bother, but as it was on his job list he had to do it. He then came to disconnect and remove it, pointing out himself he had only just put it in. We had to pay and arrange for the disconnection and removal of both the electricity and gas supplies with the supplier, and give them the final readings so we could pay our final bills. They then sent a new bill to the new occupiers to an address that didn't exist to a house that they had just removed the electricity and gas supply from!

You'd think that comunication would be easier in these days of computers and email and databases, but it seems not.

Our electricity network is managed by EDF and they were wonderfully helpful in changing our overhead cables to an underground one. Using their database, the chap in charge could tell me the last time the cables were repaired due to tree damage, the serial numbers of the two telegraph poles supporting the wires, when the poles were installed, when they would be due to be replaced and even how deep they were buried in the ground (5-feet, I recall). All this data was cross-referenced to a GIS (geographical information system) database that provided a highly accurate map of the poles and the underground cabling supplying the poles. Impressive stuff.

About 18 months after the cables were buried and the poles removed, an EDF 'inspection team' turned up to carry out a 'routine inspection' of our overhead cables. :roll:

Which all goes to show that, no matter how effective and sophisticated the tool may be, in the hands of an idiot....... :roll:

To be fair it sounds like the cable database is badly linked to the maintenance one. Hardly a rare experience it's usually when one system joins to another that things go wrong. I'd sooner EDF cable maintenance checked cables that were scheduled to be removed had actually been removed than they left aging cables unchecked because a computer told them they weren't there any more.

A reasonable point-of-view, I suppose, but could there perhaps be a happy compromise? They reliably check the cables that still exist, but not the ones that don't?

If they come back twice then they're plainly idiots or the system is idiotic
