Paul, there's timber and timber and there's paint and paint.
If the windows are oak they will require no external maintenance by you or your grandchildren if left unpainted. If you want them painted then use real linseed oil paint. The grandchildren might want to put another coat on one day.
Don't expect balanced and objective views round here. Just truth.
I would suggest that the failure of the DG units might be more of a pressing problem in future for any type of window than frame failure - although decent timber is proven to have lasted centuries given proper care.
