As a matter of interest, here's the British Library's view on the matter. . . .

Well that makes sense of copying a purchased CD to an MP3 file for listening on a PC or an iPod*, which I've always asserted does no harm to the copyright holder.

Surely it does, as they lose revenue when you don't buy a download to listen to on your ipod, another one to listen to on your phone, another one to listen to on your notebook, another one to listen to on your desktop and of course the cd to listen to in your car.................

Not really (I would argue) because I've already bought the CD and I therefore regard that as paying for my right to listen to the music thereon. Where I choose to listen must be my perogative and surely I shouldn't have to buy another copy for listening in the car, at my desk or on the train - all of which I could do with the original CD if I could be bothered to carry it around with me all the time.

So the copying to MP3 (or even to another CD) is for my listening convenience, not to diddle the poor hard-up global corporations and megastars out of an extra copy of their CD.

Since I don't own the music on the CD, the purchase price must be for the right to listen to it, which is all I'm doing . . . . (your Honour). :wink:

I knew I was playing with fire when I mentioned that copyright clause (fire....chimney...oh dear)

Anyway, there have been some very interesting and useful replies. Thanks again to everyone. My inclination is to agree with Pford75's last paragraph - and it's particularly useful to read of a very similar situation.

A slightly better analogy would be that if I buy a cd then I have the right to re-sell it to whomsoever I choose.

But the surveyor's report is not really a copyright issue. It's something else and I don't think he has a leg to stand on.
