I have a Victorian mid terrace house, on a recent visit to the loft space I noticed that the brickwork in the chimney below the roofline was coming loose can I repair without having to have the complete chimney rebuilt?
The brickwork in question is at an angle of about 45deg from the centre of the bedroom below to the central line of the roof.
Has anyone else had the same problem and if so what was the remedy?
REMY
It would very rare that a Victorian chimney should need rebuilding, there may be some slight displacement of the brick mortar and possibly some bricks, it should only rquire raking out and repointing with similar mortar as required.
This should be enough to stabilise the structure for another few decades, obviously that depends on the severity of the brick displacement.
If the bricks are sound, it is quite feasible that even displacement of one inch or slightly more ca be repointed and stabilised.
As to the bricks being at 45 deg. to the roof line , it is not quite clear what you intend to explain, I interpret it as more than one chimney from different parts of the house tapering into a tighter single block.
