I don't give a stuff about being carbon-neutral

That point-of-view may be, ahem, controversial. But it is at least pragmatic. The way that society is currently organised, you stand absolutely no chance of living a carbon-neutral life (unless you decide to live in a cave and eat acorns), so there's little point in losing sleep about it.

All that each of us can do is our best.

Despite my Malthusian views expressed elsewhere, I do care, but agree we must be pragmatic on a local and international level. I have a duty to protect my family - and so we won't be moving to a cave or giving up antibiotics because they're flown across the globe. On an international level, we shouldn't act unilaterllay to reduce our geo-political influence, given that we are likely to be entering resource-based conflict territory over the next 50-100 yrs.

Sorry going back to oak trees, Skier Hughes do you know how easy successful it would be to move an oak tree sapling, it must be about 7 feet tall but in completely the wrong place in our garden but I cannot bear to rip it up...out next door neighbour's house is surrounded by parkland and I was thinking if I can find a way they might be happy to replant it ...should I wait until it is really dormant...Dec/Jan? then dig around leaving as much rootball as possible...what do you reckon, we did this with a magnolia stellata a couple of years ago and everyone said they could not be moved but it never even checked and has flowered and grown on well.
Any advice anyone?

Micky, yes, you can move an Oak sapling that big. Basically, do as you said. Leave it until it is really dormant and take the biggest rootball you can get. I've done this with several trees and they all continued to thrive. It may set it back a little but it should soon get going again. Good luck!

Baby Trees

A bird (or squirrel?) planted an acorn at the base of one of our apple trees. Rather than throw it away I planted it in a pot, in which it lived for a couple of years thriving on benign neglect.
When we moved the tree was about four feet tall and there was no way we could keep it in our tiny town garden, so we took it down to our solicitor's office next time we visited him (we knew that he was planting up some woodland). We get progress reports now and then, and so far it seems to be thriving.
