Painting over brickwork externally is nothing new either - even the Georgians did it.

Timothy Easton wrote an interesting article for SPAB News in 2004, illustrated by a fetching example in Portman Square Lunnon - black with white lines.

The examples above are I agree pretty vibrant, (Weald and Downland Museum) not all were quite as bright, depending on the colour of the wash used.

But it's pretty unlikely our ancestors would recognise the stripped back and bare nature of many of their dwellings if they came back today.

I agree with the ancestors coming back and raising eyebrows, nevertheless when one finds a soft red brick chimney which is rendered and some other ancestor decided to cover it with red brick wallpaper, like I discovered in my place, they were taking the p**s.

Well, I've just got around to clicking on Nemesis's link. The Fitzwilliam caption contest looks fun, but I think they've got their Latin wrong.

De Gustibus Non Disputandum” (or, “There’s No Accounting For Taste”)

I reckon the correct vernacular translation is "In matters of taste there is no argument". (OK - it's actually "of taste.." but that's awkward English).

But then, I failed Latin "O" level 48 years ago.....

'Disputandum', unless I am mistaken, is a gerund, and therefore there is an element of necessity or compulsion - "Of taste there should be no dispute" is perhaps the nearest translation.
