I've just found a very similar fork in a Victorian catalogue (S & F London). It is about 6 inches long and is described as having a black horn handle. Knives on the same page are 'Shear Steel' and made in Sheffield.

Ah... thanks very much. Is there an approximate date? "Black horn" sounds about right. That's what it looks like. The shape of the handle throws me, as it looks like Scandinavian design from the 70s. It's an odd thing to bury in a window cill.

It certainly is. Surely a deliberate act? The shape of the handle and its construction is identical to a little Edwardian tool I have for unhooking the awkward buttons of tight kid gloves.

It might be worth you emailing the atropopopo guy and seeing if forks are ever used to ward off evil spirits.

The trade catalogue is from Silber & Fleming of London and Paris from the 1870s to the late 1880s. No exact date given.

I may be able to answer that empirically. We've got forks in the house, and I've never seen an evil spirit.
