No, a 20 watt CFL gives off as much heat as a 20 watt incandescent or a 20 watt halogen lamp.
The relevant figure is the wattage consumed by any lamp which should not be confused with "equivalent" light output.
It should also be pointed out that while an incandescent of any sort will tolerate high temperatures most CFLs will not.
Most CFLs will fail very early.

A 60W incandescent will kick out exactly the same amount of heat as a 60W halogen (though if you are getting technical, the wavelengths are a bit different). Halogens often come with a reflector though which will concentrate and direct the output to a certain extent which is why you may think that they give off more heat. 60W put in means 60W comes out (first law of thermodynamics).

I haven't tried the halogen bulbs in a chandelier but, as their filaments are smaller and the light more concentrated, I would have thought they would be better than ordinary incandescent lamps.
They should make the glass sparkle more.

Gareth - agree with you that this is an altogether more pleasing light....but apart from not shedding enough light to live by, at 13ft+, I wouldn't fancy lighting them every evening.

And sadly I don't have the staff to go around lighting and replenishing the rather large number of candles I would need.
