Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some advice please.. My partner and I bought a beautiful, Grade 2 listed farm-cottage just over a year ago. We are undergoing a sympathetic renovation to restore the property to it's origional beauty after some melons botched it in the 70's by covering every inch of pretty much everything in the house in cement! The house dates back to 1583 and is solid sandstone, it was rendered in the 70's (we have imaged to date this). Our first step was to get listed building consent to remove the thick cement render covering the exterior of the house, we got permission granted (yay!) and got to work hand chiselling off the render. Surprise, surprise the render has done it's fair share of damage, with lots of the stone having gone mushy from the years of damp. The mullion windows took the brunt of the damage, practically disintegrating beneath the render. Luckily we have found a wonderful stone mason who is creating new mullions for us to match the origional stonework, these will be fitted in August after we have repointed the house with lime so it can breathe.
My question is to do with our windows- we currently have single glazed units, with no lead or wood frame, they appear to have been rendered in when the job was done in the 70's. I'm unsure if they are origional or not, however I would like to do my best to salvage the panes. We need to remove the windows prior to the stonemason removing and refitting our mullions, I think this should be a case of very carefully chipping the render off the edging and popping them out. My issue is refitting! What materials would you suggest I use to reinstall the panes of glass?
Thanks for your suggestions! Any advice will be gratefully received.
