Cat on an old tin roof?

We are renovating an old stone barn, with a tired corrugated tin roof. It is laid straight on to the rafters. I want to renew the tin, but need some help with ideas.

- is there any type of tin which you would recommend?

If not tin then Heaven forbid, but is Marley's Eternit range any good? I like the thought that they produce a range of muted colours to try to be sympathetic to the setting.

- if tin, we are thinking of the type which is coated with plastisol, to extend its life; any thoughts?

- we want to relay the roof on plywood sheeting: any recommendations on type or supplier - marine ply for durability?

It is a windswept site, looking out to sea. We also want to lay a vapour barrier between the tin and the plywood. Any thoughts on what type to use?

Finally, we will need to insulate the rafters - any thoughts on which product? I thought rigid foam but don't know which product to use. Kingspan?

What's wrong with genuine wiggly tin - ie galvanised corrugated? Fine traditional roofing material.

Have you found out if your barn was originally roofed with tin? It's just that I've seen some buildings in East Anglia that were originally roofed with thatch or tiles, and now have tin roofs ...

But this is part of their history, and now recognised in E Anglia as a vernacular building material.

I have used the stuff thats used in big shed type stores, its has a 3" thick Celtex type core, a gloss plastic coated mild steel bottom surface and a coloured textured upper surface. Its meant to be fixed to purloins at 1m centres. Don't ask where I got my sheeting from but it is available as seconds from somewhere in Staffs ( I think). You see it everywhere as barn roofing, normally ridged and in buff red or light green.

I think though there is a difference between this and genuine corrugated iron. The latter has a venerable history.

Hello - you can go for 2 options; one is to get the colour coated stuff, or to use galvanised, wait for it to 'dull-off' then paint.... I have used colour coated, galvanised and taken the paint route.... all are quite acceptable although i personally prefer painted tin. here in sunny norfolk, all of the builders yards supply the galvanised sort, in 2ft widths and in 2 ft increments from 6ft to 12ft in length. lap joints by 2 corrugations, and use spring heah nails on the 'high' of the section not in the 'dip'. i did the following for my little extension..... p.board and skim, vapour check, insulation between the rafters, 12mm sterling board on top, slaters felt over, then c. battened and battened at 3ft c/c in 50mm x 50mm 'battens' before putting the tin on.........

Don't fix crinkley tin to the roof and then paint it on a hot day - your eyes go with the glare, you get heatstroke and sore bits where you have no right to have them.

and, unless you want to wear ear defenders, drill the spring head nail holes rather than trying to get the nail through the tin..........

We would love to replace our derelict chicken sheds with a building made of corrugated. Despite the fact there is one in the next field, we just know planning wouldn't allow it...
