After Oxford I gained a diploma in dishwashing, I used to wash dishes for the the Unipart factory in Cowley. With hindsight, this is one of the usefullest jobs I've done, so I mean it that I'll help out if you decide to invite all us PUkers.

At last this fireplace is rebuilt, and we're really pleased. It completes the room which has taken us 9 months to restore and redecorate!

Harking back to earlier grammar comments - can one put an exclamation mark inside the brackets above, and still finish the whole sentence with a question mark? Have never been truly clear on "special" punctuation marks inside parentheses...

I'll post some pics, I've got some puzzles in this room anyway that would benefit from the consideration of the cogniscenti!

You can do what you like with punctuation in a bracket as long as the punctuation relates to the stuff in the bracket. "Have you tried the Pont l'Eveque (I love cheese?). This is obviously wrong! But these are fine: "Have you tried the Pont l'Eveque (I love cheese!)? or "Have you tried the Pont l'Eveque? (I love cheese!). I also believe that in theory brackets should be followed by a full stop but this is often ignored.

There are probably mistakes in that, I've had too much cheese and wine to be talking sensibly about punctuation! xx

Ok perhaps my suggestion of the long screw was a bit premature without knowing all of the information , I just presumed you had a vermiculite sheet fallen in which had been stuck back with fire cement.

Please do post a picture.

Here is the house - one day it will all be limewashed so that you can't see the monstrosity added to the end by the previous owner. Slowly going thorugh internally and stripping out the 1970s makeover (plasterboard, tanking and fake beams) to expose stone, limeplaster and real beams. Also slowly replacing the modern DG with sliding sashes, etc.

Just seen the other photos on your original thread...what a beautiful feature it is. I love that pattern, do you know if it has any symbolic meaning? Anyway it's gorgeous, and suits the house so well.

Right, this is the best I can do of this room without a wide angle lens.

Bear in mind this room was nearly completed before joining this rather helpful forum, and that whilst many of you soar from the lofty pinnacles, in terms of ability and understanding, we flounder on the nursery slopes.

When was this room added on as an extension? That really puzzles me. This cupboard in the dining room is a clue, it was put into the space a window had occupied when this dining room wall formed the outer wall of the cottage. Can anyone date this cupboard?

Then presumably this panelling went in, perhaps this was a door to the outside.

Here are the windows and shutters- do they look 1930's? The whole bay (can't fit the 3rd window in- sorry) creates a good, though small, hexagonal room that fits very well with the other hexagonal and curved bays in the house.

Then there is this servant's bell, which also puzzles and intrigues me. There is no evidence of a servant living here at that time. Was the room built for an officer during the First or Second World War? The bedrooms have wartime numbers on the doors and were apparently used as dormitories, and this whole hill was very significant during both wars: it's really extremely lucky that the cottage escaped the bombs. I've seen a wonderful photo of soldiers erecting the most enormous beacon bonfire in the garden to celebrate the end of WW2. Sadly that photo has gone to France with the previous owner. Anyway, here's that bell, can anyone date it?

And here's the ongoing tricky fireplace with the right cheek caving in and the left one not looking too clever either.

The vermiculite has blackened nicely up the back, I hope the cheeks will blacken before too much longer.

Thanks for any bright ideas about all this. I wish I could date stuff.
