cast iron baths.

going to go down the cast iron road for bathing the old barnacles.
is there anything i need to know? any one had any bad experiences? it will be a relatively cheap one (700 quid cheap ) so do i need to be extra careful?

Yes, be carefull you don't break you back or staicase (or both) if an upstairs bathroom :wink:

If you want to save money, I would recommend finding an old one at a reclamation yard and then having it re-enamelled. You can spend the spare cash on the rest of the house on on some fancy taps/plunger.

weight is the other major concern. Worth reinforcing the floor if there was not a cast iron bath there previously

We light a fire under ours to warm the water. Doesn't work so well with a plastic bath.

We bought a single ended one and two double ended ones from a guy off of ebay for 1 x£300 and £2 x £600 = £1500 plus 40 delivery to Somerset from Yorkshire. Well impressed. Sadly no fires underneath as would scorch the floorboards. New imported but enamel is good and recommended.

Very useful, thanks. The ones in the first link are very nice, and affordable. The plastic ones- dunno. Something a bit suspicious about those shiny paws, I'd need to have a closer look.

So many of them are such a crazy price - £2104, 26 for the Thomas Crapper one. This Midas gold one from Fired Earth makes me want to flog Chris' car secretly and just get it!

Bear in mind that hot water cools very quickly in a cast iron bath so can limit nice long soaks. We chickened out an went for an Idealcast roll top bath in the end.
Also, lots of firms sell a re-enamelling process which has a limited lifespan. To truly re-enamel the bath needs to fired in a kiln. Albion Bath Co offer the service, but I expect it will be very pricey.

lol , noooooooo. i have enough pink in my life at the moment. mrs robgil wants to paint it the same colour as our cistern , mallard something or other.

i am more into green my self and colour uncoordination.
