First I'm having a break, then I'm going to practice my lime plastering and joinery skills on my house.

A good six or seven months of solid graft should move the project on somewhat, and prepare me for a full time job that involves more physical effort than pressing keys.

Thanks Biff - it took me a while to find them, I'd been going up to Ryedale near Castle Howard before then. Nice trip, but not very eco friendly.

And then I got into the hydralime mix-it-yourself job for lime putty- works a treat.

I bought my last lot of lime mortar and finishing plaster ready mixed (to save time, when money was no problem!) and it was lovely stuff. Plus they were very helpful too.

That reminds me - I was on holiday in Devon recently and Mike Wye's folk were at Arlington Hall, doing a lime demo. Very interesting too. Unfortunately Devon's way to far for me to go to fetch my lime. Perhaps when I make my first million I'll buy a little cottage there - handy for trips Mike Wye.

One thing I have done ( I have considered the same thing as you) was to phone to county conservation bod at the county council and have a chat with them about where there are lack of local skills ie Lime plasterers or flint knappers etc and find out about courses that they run. I know it is a bit far but Essex county council run them so maybe they do near you.

You can meet the instructors and make a good network of contacts if you are willing. good luck

It is good to have one but costs a few quid when starting out, so think about it but when I employ anyone on large projects I insist on having them. For one thing it stops illegal workers getting on site with no insurance cover (not always but sometimes).

Ian thanks for making this thread, and everyone else thanks for the replies. As I mentioned in another thread I've lost my career due to illness and have been in a what-do-I-do-with-the-rest-of-my-life limbo mood for a while now. I've no experience of renovation but I've always had a love for this sort of work. It's not yet the time to consider making a living from renovating period property but this thread will be very useful in the future. And in a place like Perthshire there should be plenty of oppotunities!

Ian I've said it in another thread but I'll say it here too, I honestly wish you the best of luck and I've no doubt it will be more rewarding that the IT industry!

Well, lets hope that our experiences with doing up our own homes will stand us in good stead for the future.

But for the moment, I'm going to chill out, relax and STOP. Give myself a bit of time to recover from the shock of being kicked out of my job!!!

And then set to on the house, but at a steady pace.

My commute just got even shorter - hurray (and no more office politics).

I'm feeling better already.

Worms - until the Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD contest has been won by one or the other, I'll stick with CD's for my music. I may still do so then - a Beatles or Jethro Tull album needs no more capacity than what a CD provides.
