Cannabis smell?

Over the past couple weeks we’ve started to notice a quite distinct cannabis smell from our daughters bedroom. And no she isn’t smoking it, she’s 10!
I’ve been through all the obvious things I can think of like smell is coming in from neighbours but you open the window and smell outside, nothing.
It’s like it’s coming from within her room.
It’s on the middle floor so I don’t think it can be fungal/damp related and I see no sign of damp. The room above is our loft bedroom and there’s no smell up there and I’ve been in the loft space recently, no smell or bat sign from what I could see (I’m told bat poo can smell a lot like it).
Just thought I’d take a punt on asking here to see if it’s something quite old house specific? Has anyone encountered something similar?
There’s a possibility the previous occupant may have smoked it in that room but there was no smell when we moved in last summer and as I say it’s only really started smelling the past couple weeks. I’m completely stumped!

I think you said you were detached so the usual suspects of neighbours growing etc can be ruled out.

Dead rodents under the floorboards are definitely a possibility - particularly if they have been inconsiderate enough to die next to a hot water or central heating pipe

Hi, oh no, I’m sorry to read this. It must be worrying too. When did you purchase the house? Was it ever unoccupied, even before purchase?

I just thought I’d double check you’ve definitely smelt cannabis before and know what smell to expect? I absolutely hate the smell, cigarette smoke, vapes etc etc. I would know within one sniff and would vomit, so just asking

Anyways, Is your daughter’s bedroom sharing a wall, chimney or anything else with the neighbour? Could there be a tiny leak that causing rotting? It’s a long shot, but Is your daughter hiding something possibly, eg a little pet or something ? When I was 10 years old, I got up to all sorts!

Yes we’re detached here. Property was always occupied though only by a single occupant for a couple years so most of the bedrooms were not used regularly unless she had family come to stay.

My previous address was on a council estate so I definitely know what it smells like. I think half the street were on the stuff
I actually quite like the smell within reason but these days it’s far too overpowering. I’m into my hoppy ales and if you open up a strong IPA I find the smell very similar. The Canabis and hops plants are from the same family so I’m told so makes sense when you think about it.

No sign of rodents anywhere but I suppose anything is possible. I think it’s the next room on the list to get decorated so we will see what that uncovers if anything and if I get to the bottom of it, will let you know!

It's funny you mention this as we recently had a similar experience but outside, especially when damp. Initially I thought it had to be someone but it was so strong it didn't make sense. But turns out there are many plants that smell like weed. Some ferns, flowers, even marigolds.

Imperial Fritilaria really smell like cannabis. The person delivering our bulbs made a comment about the smell!!!

I agree with Lizzie, I would wonder if your daughter was hiding something. Weed isn't so difficult to come across these days. No reflection on her, children of that age are programmed to do silly things. I once decided to start a little bonfire under my bed, luckily my dad walked past my room at the point the flames were rising nicely. Needless to say he wasn't impressed!
