Can wooden skirting be fitted in a round room?

I've read the maths advice in this thread over and over and I'm afraid I'm still very confused. So diameter, circumference and radius are all different? I thought they were synonyms! No wonder my measurements go so badly wrong!

The breakfast room is rectangular, but with one end curved. Running string along the curve gives meeasurement of 5.5 metres. The width of the room is 3.5 metres. The porch curve measures 175. I don't know if that helps at all.

The first bit is the information that is needed. The curved part is half a circle (or semicircle). The 5.5m you have measured is only half of the circumference of the complete circle but as you only have half the circle, this makes sense. The width of the room is also the width of the semicircle and is the diameter of the equivalent circle. We can check these figures by starting with the diameter (3.5m) and multiplying by pi (3.1415) to give the circumference of the complete circle (11.0m). Dividing by 2 will then give you the half circumference of the curve of your wall (5.5m which is what you measured).

So the first bit all makes sense. You then mention that the curve measures 175 which makes no sense at all....

But I suspect your porch is merely curved, rather than circular. Perhaps we can have a competition at the party? Just lay in a supply of skirting board and saws, and the one who gets closest to a fit, or having a fit, gets an extra dose of Pimm's.

They sure are. Circumference is the distance around the outside of the circle. Both radius and diameter are straight lines that go from one side to the other side right through the exact centre of the circle. Diameter goes all the way across, radius just half way.

I'm confused. If your room is "rectangular", it can't have a curved end! :roll: Anyway, given that the radius of the curved end is 1.75m (half the width) then yes you have a perfect half-circle in the curved bit since 1.75m x pi (3.14 :roll: )=5m49.5cm. Given we're being lax about measurements on the forum now :roll: , I'll allow you the half centimetre you didn't measure accurately enough! 8)

I have no idea what you mean when you say your "porch curve measures 175". Is that metres? In which case I think your porch is roughly the size of Berkshire!

Incidentally if you want to carpet your porch (or indeed your curved breakfast room), you'll need to get your head around the area of a circle being pi multiplied by the square of the radius.... or you can ask Chris! :lol:

If you're in no hurry, cut a sheet of exterior plywood to fit the curve of the wall, plant a tree of the type of wood you want to use, fix the plywood upright next to the tree, and train it follow the curve, tying it at regular intervals. Ideal for someone with a very long to-do list to work through, and a lot of patience .

But you aren't allowed to tease me on this, it's very diffy.

I have 4 rooms with curves requiring skirting. The bit that's bothering me today is in the porch, a wall measuring 175 cm. As Gareth says the room isn't round, and this curve goes away from you, if that makes sense.

I'm beginning to understand why no-one's put joinery on these curvy Walls before!

Love the idea of a drunken skirting competition though!

The plan of the porch, I believe, is not unlike this:
So yes, skirtings can be fitted, the difficult bit will be the transition from the curved end to the straight sides.

Hmm- it's sort of like that, but imagine a circle was overlaid on the left and right side, and then you'd get those other curves that give the middle of it a "waist"...I'm lost without my camera.

I failed my 11+, I'm sure you can all see why now!

A thought:

Take your skirting-to-be outside in the rain* and stand it on edge in the garden.
Buy/make lots of shortish stakes and use them to hold it in a gentle curve.
Each day move the stakes a little, to increase the curve by very gradual increments.
Once you've achieved the amount of curve you want, leave it in situ for quite a while (a week?) before you release it from the pegs.

My guess is that once released it will still spring back a little, but not so much that you couldn't force it into shape when you fix it to the wall.
