r.e. Water fire extinguishers, years we had a small fire at my boarding School, attempts to put it out with a water extinguisher (or three) failed and the fire brigade put it out.The next day all 50 or so extinguishers were "let off", none produced more then you could piddle. The next day (or the same afternoon?) all were replaced, the next day (Sunday)one of these new fire extinguishers was kicked over and off it went, eventually it was poked out of the window and yours truly had to clean up about 10 sq.m of some white deposit from the floor and walls of the Junior day room. Some months later another one was used to extinguish a car fire on the main road out side the School. So I reckon the moral is fire extinguishers should be maintained though with a domestic situation, the cost of getting a chap in to certify the extinguisher would cost more then the actual beast. Perhaps places like Halfords should offer an exchange service (at a price) for clean and still sealed fire extinguishers. So the testing can be done in bulk and so minimise the cost.

Ah - I've answered my own question, haven't I?

Re maintenance, with CO2 extinguishers there is little to go wrong apart from leaks, tampering or fooling around with them.
I use an accurate set of electronic scales and weigh each of them every six months to check their contents.
(the original charge of CO2 is stamped on the metal body around the top as net weight, together with gross and tare)
I record their weights on a sticky label stuck to the extinguisher body and check the cleanliness and integrity of the handle and horn.

Over the last 10 years out of all of them (I have 18) only one leaks anything at all, a regular 5 gms a year.

All other common types of extinguisher deteriorate over time and cannot be checked easily if at all.

I know there are many lady fire fighters but, and I mean this with no disrespect or any sexist overtones, if I ever need to be rescued from a burning building I'd rather be slung over the shoulder of a burly fireman than a fire-lady. Equality of opportunity is all right and proper but there are times when sheer strength is called for.

I completely agree Flyfisher, though of course am all for women working in the Fire Brigade if that's their yen - after all, those men must need lots of cups of tea making and their uniforms stitching and mending over and over! Not to mention plenty of soothing coo-cooing and rubbing on of ointments if they singe their manly beards!

Joce, one day in the new year you must come to our club and I'll introduce you to our (6 handicap) firefighter. She's a really delightful person, but somehow I can't see her doing much coo-cooing or tea-making, let alone uniform-mending or ointment-rubbing!


For the benefit of any golfers - the only holes where she can use her driver off the tee are the long par-5s. She finds it most frustrating to be confined to the red tees and would much rather play off the whites.
