Ours tastes very very stony. I then put it through the Brita jug though and it's nicer than any bottled mineral water.
I like the idea of the light that comes on when the water's running low! Our pump just runs and runs, making a horrid noise and probably knackering the pump, and then I know to go and flick the switch in the attic to switch it off. There are two switches up there - well and rain - it's a similar set up to yours. If the well's run out, you can switch to rain and vice versa.
One thing though, the previous owner made a huge fuss of rationing the well water in periods of drought.I don't think it makes any difference, if you don't use it the ground will. It is exactly like digging a hole on the beach, when there's water, it will fill up, when there isn't, it won't. Nothing to do with your usage. It took me a long while to really get that.
Robin, my guess is your extension is built over the well. But the rain harvesting sounds eminently sensible if water must be metred. I wonder what will happen to the water table if the country all start harvesting rainwater for their garden use? It will go back into the ground, and continue on its journey I suppose.
The UK's population has got to start realising that we can't go on reproducing and using the water as we have in the last 20 years.
