Fair point. Presumably there must be an expected average efficiency over the lifetime of the generator for it to be energetically worthwhile.

I wonder what that figure typically is, as a percentage of the max rated output?

Thanks for all the advice on wind turbines! The cottage is in a valley in an AONB!

My ideal would be to buy a few acres and build a small low impact house on it. I'd want loads of insulation and passive solar with a woodburner for backup using fuel from my own land. However, I don't want to spend years battling with the planners so the chance to buy a ready built shell is appealing. I'm living in my camper van at the moment, having sold my last house a few months ago, and getting used to living in a small space and gradually learning to reduce my use of resources. I want to avoid as much of the hi-tech "green" stuff as possible, but live in low impact luxury!
