Upload Another i am still doing something wrong but you can see the crack in the wall at low level it is not present i beleive the work that has been done in the past has allowed the wall section to fall outwards as you may well see i have removed the ivy but it has grown up into the wall and has turned many bricks into red cotton wool the wall before i even touched it was in aterrible state covered in thick slabs of hard cement . i will show some more pics when i have the chance i have already started to replace brick at atime to make good . the wall seems to be built on top of someform of heath stone. yes it is listed and i am permited to repair where nec i am using lime and have had bricks made to match as near as possible and turning good bricks where possible

I think few realise just how damaging ivy can be.

We had to rebuild the gable end of our cart shed (propped the roof up with acro props) as ivy had penetrated the lime and rubble and was growing in the interior.

The stems had grown to about the thickness of a wrist and were pushing stones out of place. The roof was hanging on simply through habit.

You've been very lucky to have been able to remove the cement without too much damage - lovely bricks.

Which is odd as I was informed that lime is poisonous to ivy. On our house the ivy came away like a carpet as it had fortunately not suckered well into the bricks, but apart from some very small patches of lime coming away, it was untouched for about 40' of brickwork.

I wonder if there are different types of ivy?

This was yer common or garden sort, the type grows everywhere - gets good black berries in the winter.

Grew right through the thick wall. Very soft lime.

Presumably over time as lime carbonates back to its natural state (chalk) it loses its poisonous properties....

The ivy on my back yard wall came off like sunburned skin off a sore nose. It was quite theraputic peeling it off. It had been there 20 years (I planted it) and was a lovely yellow edged variety but was growing too far out into the yard - I had to take a saw to the main trunk.

The yard wall is in a dreadful state - but that's why the ivy was planted there in the first place, to hide the manky wall. It grew well and it's not caused any extra damage at all. But it didn't half harbour snails, I could have kept Gordon Ramsey's Caff supplied for a month.

Out lime is perhaps some 300 years old on the bit that the ivy was on.

Maybe Nemesis's was low lime content? Or a virulent strain of Ivy

Looks pretty limey to me, maybe good Northumberland soil.
