advise needed on how to deal with thick ivy rootes damaging soft brick on 17th century cottage i am plannining to remove rootes and dig underneath base bricks and replace one at a time the problem is mainly at ground level and it looks like the house is built on earth only

Agreed - I removed the ivy from the front of our house - which came off like a carpet fortunately.
I cut the roots back as close to the ground as I could and then left them for a couple of years - removing any small sprouts of ivy that appeared in the interim. The remaining roots then dried out and were easy to chop away at and remove.

Once the pic is uploaded, your pic should appear in a blue backgound box. There are three things you can choose - click on the text in the bottom box (forum BB Code) and not the others.
It should go blue.
Ues the COPY (or CUT) function on your computer, then PASTE that text in the box where you do your PPUK posts.
Try the PREVIEW and see that all is OK ... then press SUBMIT.

No idea - I tend not to have any problem with this. That's very odd... cannot see why this should happen. Have you used the 'cut' or 'copy' function first? You can't paste anything in the PPUK box until you have done that. Once it's copied you put the cursor in the PPUK box and then the paste should function and paste the link.
Try registering for Photobucket - it's free and you don't need to do any cut and paste as that's automatic. Once you've uploaded and click it does the cut for you and a click in the PPUK box should paste automatically the link.
I agree it's complicated until you have done it once or twice!

Without pictures I suggest that from your description of the damage so far the roots have dried out the ground and caused the house to settle/move.
I don't agree with what you want to do because you could make the situation far worse by undermining the bricks.
If it were only a matter or just removing single bricks one at a time and replacing them with no damage caused elsewhere that could be done.
However that will not solve/cure your problem of the 2m crack.
I would not recommend you dig out any of the foundation soil before you know what you are doing.
Is the house listed?
Either way the damage is done and could become worse so you need to have an expert on older houses to examine the damage and advise you.

But to paste you have to have copied and then need to have the PPUK posting 'box' on screen and the icon placed where you want to post the text link to the picture.

Well there are probably the keyboard shortcuts you mention, but it's a simple matter of a few mouse clicks to do it the way I do.
It's realising you can't paste until you have somewhere on screen to paste the cut or copied link I think maybe the problem.
