Thank you Ian! Very helpful and exactly what I was getting at. I will read the details on the link with much interest. I am not doubting the many positive attributes of Holkhams, and have no desire to be "timber unfriendly" but I just wondered if there was a suitable alternative out there! If you dont ask, you dont get!

I've used the Earthborn eggshell, and I'd give it a 4/10, although coverage was noticeably better than other water based eggshells I've used. Unfortunately like all water based eggshells it is an absolute sod to get a decent finish, without brush marks. I such much prefer a regular high VOC oil paint for finish quality any day. I have tried very expensive brushes aimed at such paints and the marks are still horrific I think.
I do like the clay paint though, and tech specs give it the same permeability as limewash. I rang another "Eco" paint manufacturer asking about permeability and couldn't get them past the how wonderful it was for the environment. They were a bit put out when I suggested I didn't really care but was more concerned about it sealing my lime plaster
