Does anyone have an alternative to Holkhams linseed paint that perhaps keeps its positive qualities but is not a nightmare to use? ie 6 days to dry & runs everywhere? Plus I've heard that linseed based white paints tend to develop a green tinge relatively quickly? This would be for external wood. Help!! (And if the super product I have in mind doesnt exist - then it should do!) I would prefer to avoid standard gloss and have heard to F&B isnt breathable or that environmentally friendly?

I suspect you're putting it on too thickly Janey. I've used Holkhams outside in November in very cold conditions (not recommended.....) and it took about 36 hours to go off - still not quick I know - and no problems with it running. Can't comment on the tinge, I've only used a buttermilk-type colour and black.

This article has a list of paint suppliers - scroll down to the bottom. I can't promise that any of them are easier to use than Holkham. My only experience of linseed paints is that they are quite runny and, as Feltwell says, have to be put on patiently in thin coats.

It's not breathable though. I've heard linseed oil gives a lovely look when finally dry, so good luck.
Do bits of fluff drift into the drying linseed oil paint and get stuck?

But is it any good? Sorry Biff, my first reaction to eco paints was "will it last?"
Has anyone used the new F&B Eco stuff? Am about to have external doors painted and have to have a certain colour (LBC) and suspect the new stuff might not be so durable.
Would love to have gone with Holkham linseed but decided against as it was a chilly Feb paint job.

I've painted indoors in a cold unheated room in midwinter and it's dried relatively quickly. I'd also say it is being appllied too thickly if it is running everywhere, several thin coats is best.
I've used the old white adn it is still quite white, when it's been cleaned as with all the building work it quickly gets covered in dust. The outside doesn't look any different colour to the inside and some has now been done about 3 years.

I've used the FnB eco eggshell Carol. It seems pretty tough and durable, (I've used it outside) but there's not the viscosity of an oil finish. It doesn't seem to sit so nicely on top of previous oil finishes, and looks better if it's the only kind of paint that's gone on the surface - if that makes sense. If you're picking out two contrasting colours, one in oil, one in eco, as I was, the differences in finishes really shows up. You have to thin it with water; it's just not the same.
How eco paint weathers over time compared to oil eggshell I couldn't say.
The other problem about using a breathable linseed paint is that you'd have to strip back to bare wood for it to work - ie get rid of all the impermeable finishes. That's not practical here given the quantities of wood - and, also, you have to really wonder if you want to strip off all that history and evidence of past colour schemes.
If it's a case of a new door, or new windows, however, the linseed paint sounds like a great idea.

Yes, if it drips and runs you've got too much on the brush and are applying it too thickly. Be mean. It's expensive stuff. But there nothing as good.
Also look for "micro porous" paint which allows moisture transfer. The 'breathable' word is a bit misleading as it's moisture not air you're allowing to move.
We've used an oil paint from Beckers (Oljefarg) on our replacement vinery. However there were EU Health and Safety changes (?) that meant it's almost impossible to buy oil paint as of Jan 2010. My supplier was phasing out Oljefarg for a water based replacement from the same manufacturer - I bought some of the last tins to repaint the windows later this year. I'm not sure how Holkham are getting around the same legislation but I assume there is a way for a niche to continue to cater for historic buildings.

Oh come off it. Holkhams paint is made of linseed oil - you can put it on your salad, and TiO2 pigment - it's in your toothpaste.

Thanks very much - I do try not to load it on, but I suppose there is a chance that patience is not my forte! I'm still not convinced its the most user-friendly product! Has anyone tried the earthborn range of paints? They do a proaqua eggshell that might fit the bill...................

I tried Aglaia Weather Protection Lacquer for my exterior doors last Summer, and it was lovely to use and dried quicker than the Holkham linseed paint.
My local supplier sells it as External Natural Oil Paint in Historic Colours
