Bread oven door?

Note to self - must check out these Freecycle places.

A piece of misshapen 2 inch oak roughly 60x12 inches needed/wanted to create a shelf to support a very small Belfast (lab) sink set me back £60 a few years back. It don't pay to shop with the First Lady.

I know what you mean. There's a wood recycling centre near me and they have some random bits, but if it's oak or another hardwood and decent looking, the prices are extortionate.... still, that's St Albans for you.....

Done. It's not fixed, just plonked there. With a wodge of leftover woodfibre insulation shoved in the hole behind...

My original one is just 'plonked' too, just needs a couple of crude wood handles and the job's done...

You guys clearly don't have a quality inspector following you around critiquing your efforts; I'm never allowed to be a plonker.

I really like the oiled wood look and that handle fits nicely. Not so sure of the craters of the moon and Lacey bits though... or is that a Smiley face?

Late to this party due to a long-standing photo/camera/uploader problem.

Door to our newer bread oven, likely c1820. Newer that is, compared to the oven in the sitting room.



Seen some use I think. I presume the bottom burnt off.



Elm, like the cottage, the repair is also elm, the repair and what I take to be the original handle affixed with wrought nails, so in-period.

Nowadays the oven has been taken over by OH....

Hello, it's been a while since I've posted on this forum, I hope you're all doing well. I'm trying to improve the house's heat retention, and an area of uninsulated heat loss is the bread oven. So I'm thinking of making a free-standing, non-permanent, nice-looking door for it, perhaps from oak. I don't think there ever was a door on it originally because I've found no fixings for hinges in the mortar. Has anyone seen such a thing? Were there ever such things as free-standing wooden bread oven doors? Picture attached of the opening as it is now. Thanks!

“Where space (and wealth) allowed, the kitchen fireplace incorporated a brick-built bread oven (sometimes with a stone base), recognisable as a deep, arched, opening into the side of the inglenook. The oven was brought up to temperature by burning brushwood, the ashes from which were raked out (using a long-handled wrought iron or wood spade-like instrument known as a ‘peel’), before placing dough, and sometimes small cakes and biscuits, within the recess to bake. The oven was sealed by a removable wooden door, and later by a hinged cast iron door”

I also recently uncovered our bread oven from behind a brick wall, unfortunately the hinge was so rusted from lack of an air brick in the wall that it snapped. I think I can get it cleaned up and source a new hinge piece.
Mine actually has a flue just in front of the oven that leads into the main chimney for the kitchen. (Next project)
My previous cottage had one sent into the side of the inglenook and the smoke would have just gone up the main chimney. I reckon it might have made one’s eyes smart a bit! It did make an excellent wine storage area. Kept an even temp all year
I’m hoping to get my latest find back up and running…. Pizza anyone?
